Scouts Learn Job Interview Skills

At our April 13 and 20th meetings, Mr. Hsia and Mr. Black organized a two-part Job Interview Skills workshop for our Troop. The first date was the workshop where instruction was provided on interview skills. Then, on the 20th, each Scout underwent a mock interview with parent volunteers who served as "potential employers".

The activity helped the Scouts practice getting in front of people and expressing themselves in a positive manner. For their mock interview, each Scout chose from 5 different "jobs" and prepared for an interview as if they were applying for that job.
  • Lawn mowing
  • Newspaper delivery boy
  • Selling game systems such as Nintendo, Xbox, ets
  • City Parks activity coordinator
  • Patrol Leader/Troop Guide

The Scouts learned the following tips on a having a good interview (The 2 Ps, Presentation and Preparedness)

Presentation:
  • Being neatly dressed and groomed
  • Good handshake and greeting
  • Being pleasant and inquisitive
  • Make sure your voice projects
  • Make good eye contact at all times

Preparedness:
  • Commonly asked questions
Why do you want this job and what makes you a good candidate?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What experience if any that you have?
  • Be prepared to give examples and stories that you may have.

And finally, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (in front of a mirror and/or family member)!

Harrison K, Avery K, Richard G, Ajay M, Igor B, and Dmytro B, along with three adults participated with Scouts and adults from other troops in the District.

Together, we helped clear a brushy, treed area where the new High Adventure course was installed, as well as cleared debris from campsites.

Scouts Scout for Food

March 13 and 20, 2010.

Every year, the Chief Seattle Council supports our local food banks by offering to collect food with the help of scouts throughout the Puget Sound region. Our troop participates in this effort every year by distributing fliers and collecting bags of food from our neighbors in the Eastgate area.

This year our neighbors were kind enough to set out 45 bags of food for Troop 626 scouts to pick up during an economy when needs are at their highest levels. Some folks made a special purchase of cases of infant formula just for this food drive. Awesome!

Clearly, we have good neighbors where we live. Thanks to all who contributed to this food drive. And thanks to the scouts and parents of Troop 626 who helped.

Scouts Scream for Ice Cream!

At our February 9th Troop meeting, the scouts held a Patrol ice cream making challenge. Starting from milk, cream, and various flavoring ingredients the Patrols used ziploc bags, ice and salt to make ice cream. See basic instructions here.

Three adults served as judges and crowned the Phoenix Patrol winner with their "Vanilla and chocolate chip delight!"

It was a great hands on activity that resulted in a fun treat for all!
