Scouts Scout for Food

March 13 and 20, 2010.

Every year, the Chief Seattle Council supports our local food banks by offering to collect food with the help of scouts throughout the Puget Sound region. Our troop participates in this effort every year by distributing fliers and collecting bags of food from our neighbors in the Eastgate area.

This year our neighbors were kind enough to set out 45 bags of food for Troop 626 scouts to pick up during an economy when needs are at their highest levels. Some folks made a special purchase of cases of infant formula just for this food drive. Awesome!

Clearly, we have good neighbors where we live. Thanks to all who contributed to this food drive. And thanks to the scouts and parents of Troop 626 who helped.

Scouts Scream for Ice Cream!

At our February 9th Troop meeting, the scouts held a Patrol ice cream making challenge. Starting from milk, cream, and various flavoring ingredients the Patrols used ziploc bags, ice and salt to make ice cream. See basic instructions here.

Three adults served as judges and crowned the Phoenix Patrol winner with their "Vanilla and chocolate chip delight!"

It was a great hands on activity that resulted in a fun treat for all!

Also in attendance with their family: Ilian H and Lazare H.

Scouts Practice Pipe Plumbing!

On December 8th, the scouts of Troop 626 learned how to sweat copper pipes. Sometime down the road, they may be faced with fixing a broken plumbing pipe and they’ll be able to fix it for their Mom or Dad.

Both Logan S. and Cory B. lead up this project by preparing the materials, organizing the meeting, and preparing and delivering a training session for the troop.

All of the boys learned how to measure, cut, flux, and solder copper plumbing pipe. They learned about elbows, tees, caps, and straight connectors. They learned how to safely fire up a torch while being prepared with leather gloves and goggles.

When they use this new skill in the future, they’ll remember that they learned this skill in their Boy Scout Troop 626.

Cory and Logan - Thanks!
