Scouts Learn Job Interview Skills

At our April 13 and 20th meetings, Mr. Hsia and Mr. Black organized a two-part Job Interview Skills workshop for our Troop. The first date was the workshop where instruction was provided on interview skills. Then, on the 20th, each Scout underwent a mock interview with parent volunteers who served as "potential employers".

The activity helped the Scouts practice getting in front of people and expressing themselves in a positive manner. For their mock interview, each Scout chose from 5 different "jobs" and prepared for an interview as if they were applying for that job.
  • Lawn mowing
  • Newspaper delivery boy
  • Selling game systems such as Nintendo, Xbox, ets
  • City Parks activity coordinator
  • Patrol Leader/Troop Guide

The Scouts learned the following tips on a having a good interview (The 2 Ps, Presentation and Preparedness)

Presentation:
  • Being neatly dressed and groomed
  • Good handshake and greeting
  • Being pleasant and inquisitive
  • Make sure your voice projects
  • Make good eye contact at all times

Preparedness:
  • Commonly asked questions
Why do you want this job and what makes you a good candidate?
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What experience if any that you have?
  • Be prepared to give examples and stories that you may have.

And finally, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE (in front of a mirror and/or family member)!
